| The Rhode Island Labor History Society, or RILHS, was born in 1975 out of the desire to save and popularize local labor history. A handful of union activists and scholars spent the following decade publishing books and pamphlets, sponsoring lectures and commemorations, and collecting and preserving artifacts of Rhode Island working class and ethnic history. We have evolved since that time to include a membership of nearly four hundred people, expanding our outreach to include an annual banquet, conference, and other events to sustain our mission. |

The Rhode Island Labor History Society strives to preserve, publish, and honor
the history of ordinary working-class people in the state of Rhode Island.
We aim to celebrate the work of labor unions, and the people whose toil has
shaped our local communities. Our organization relies on the commitment of our members to continue our work. We believe that is is essential for the next generation of students, union activists, and workers to understand the rich history of struggle and success that has preceded them. While the RILHS continues to do well, there is an increasing amount of gray hair among our members and those honored at our banquet and conferences. The need to expand our organization's base of support and step up educational activities to reach a new generation of students in order to ensure an active future for labor's past is clear. To that end, we hope that old and new friends will support our mission. |
| We are always
looking to expand our membership! We invite individuals and
organizations alike to get involved in the RILHS to connect with other
labor historians, activists, and workers in the state. Members are
invited to take part in the annual labor day parade, our banquet,
conference, and other events sponsored by the Society.
